Web Hosting and Development

If you are a web developer, you spend a lot of time putting different elements together.  How much time did you take to consider a domain name?  This is an essential part of the process – let’s take a look at how to get the best domain and assign it to the host so that links and other elements can be developed.

Elements of web development:

  1. Picking a domain: Having the right domain name is really important to a website so that it can be marketed properly and also for SEO. Search engines take this into consideration along with suffixes to load results.  Make sure that the web server is located as close to your location as possible as it will affect loading speed.
  2. Choosing a domain name: This is an art form in itself. Do some research and focus on the area of business. The domain name could also be a keyword, which would make it easy for potential visitors to find your site. Use tools like Google Analytics to scout out keywords that visitors use to find your site.  A domain name has to be unique and not used by others.  If it is already in use, it will not be available to any other company for registration.
  3. Registering a Domain Name: If you have the domain name already picked out and it is available, register it with a domain registration company. There are quite a few and the fee ranges between $5 and $15 per year.  Provide an email address and the name that you would like to be shown in the public record.
  4. Setting up domain to point to specific webhost: Once the domain name is registered, the next thing to take care of is to have a web host. There are quite a few companies which do this for a reasonable fee. Many registration companies also do web hosting.  They can also refer you to companies which offer these services.  The point is to have the Domain Name Servers of your company pointed out to the web host. Find out the web host’s DNS. Log in to your domain registrar’s account, go to the domain name page and find the settings. There is a feature which will let you make your changes – once the settings have been changed, this will become available within 24 hours.  You can upload files, set up email accounts and also do work using the new domain area.
